Northern comfort

You may have noticed that I’m partial to certain colour combinations in the garden. These hand-knitted wool socks from the closed ‘always open’ craft shop on Papa Westray were well worth ringing on the bell for. And waiting. The colours summarise the Orkney landscape, the sky, the sea.

Margit knits them with 5 needles. She doesn’t ‘believe’ in websites or ‘do’ mail order. You have to visit the shop on one of the remotest islands to buy them. Persevere with the door bell. They’re well worth the journey …BIRU-WP-20150906T095544GMT-0100.jpg

And yes, I really did take the shortest schedule flight in the world (1.5 minutes) to get to Papa Westray… from Westray, itself a 2 hour ferry from the main Orkney island, Mainland… reached by another 6 hour ferry from Aberdeen, Scotland… via a 12 hour drive up the M5/M6 from Somerset…  to buy these socks.BIRU-WP-20150831T155343GMT-0100.jpg
