Fortnum & Mason: bee-generous gifts without the sting

There is something very endearing about Fortnum & Mason, the department store of Piccadilly fame. I always love going there as, unlike a lot of flashier London department stores, it seems to have kept its welcoming charm whilst staying smart and special. If I’m in the area, I can’t resist popping in and buying a tin of their Smoky Earl Grey tea. If my daughter is with me, it’s become a bit of a ritual to spend an hour in their glamorous ice-cream parlour before heading back to the muddy West Country. And it’s a great place for festive foodie gift-buying.

I couldn’t face shopping in London at Christmas time though, so it’s great to see they have some inexpensive gifts online, alongside their world-famous luxury hampers.

There’s been a lot of buzz about their honey over the last couple of years, with the fancy bee hives on the store roof:

Four colonies of Fortnum’s famous bees have been living on the roof of our Piccadilly store since 2008. Every year they produce a truly delicious honey – so good that these exclusive bees have a waiting list for their produce.

What a fitting gift idea for anyone who loves bees in their garden… here are a few ideas of other bee related things available to buy now on the Fortnum & Mason website:

The stocking filler: Salisbury Plain Honey £6.75Screen Shot 2015-11-28 at 12.33.33

I’ve heard that their Salisbury Plain honey is probably the most ‘natural’ as it is harvested from a vast area that has been closed to agricultural farming practices for decades (due to it being off-limits Army training ground). Apart from the odd tank, it’s relatively untouched. So this is the one I’d like in my stocking, please, Captain Christmas!

Something for the hostess: F&M Honey & Preserves Book £10

Fortnum & Mason Honey & Preserves cook book

This book looks very tantalising… I haven’t seen inside it but its online blurb has me intrigued enough to try it:

This handy little book delves into Fortnum’s long history of making and selling preserves and offers a collection of recipes such as Marmalade-glazed Ham and Scallops with Honey, Soy and Chilli as well as ideas for tea time treats and puddings, all illustrated with colour photographs.

Something for the eternal-cold sufferer: Fortnum & Mason Beehive Design Half Pint Mug £19.95
